Text: Daniel 5:22-31

Dear Brethren,

"AND THIS IS THE INSCRIPTION…MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN" Daniel 5:25
The advisors of King Belshazzar could not and probably did not dare to interpret this inscription the wall. Language is language. If the advisors did not know the language, then they could always scout around and find someone who would know the language. They may claim that they did not know the language (Daniel 5:8).

What was more likely missing was the courage that Daniel displayed. The problem was probably not only the language of the inscription. The deeper problem lay in the interpretation and application of the inscription on the wall.

This was the hardest part. Nevertheless, Daniel could not flinch. He must tell the King exactly what God was saying to him.

The words of Daniel were striking indeed. They had to be spoken - even though it may result in his death.

MENE… Imagine saying to King Belshazzar that his days are numbered!

TEKEL… Imagine saying to the mighty king that he has been found wanting!

UPHARSIN…Imagine again saying to the king of the mighty Babylonian Empire that his kingdom would be broken up and be given to the Medes and Persians…

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE
King Belshazzar heard the interpretation of Daniel and received it as humbly as he could. He even honoured Daniel for his courageous work of speaking the truth with such candour.

"Then Belshazzar gave the command,
and they clothed Daniel with purple
and put a chain of gold around his neck,
and made a proclamation that he
should be the third ruler in the kingdom."
Daniel 5:29

If only Belshazzar had availed himself of the wisdom and experience of Daniel long before this incident, he might have been able to avert the judgment of God. He may have showed humility and wisdom when he sought to honour Daniel at this point of time. However, it was a case of "too little, too late".

Belshazzar was slain that very night. The prophecy came to pass. His kingdom was split in two. The Medes and the Persians combined forces and conquered the Babylonian empire.

How we must stand absolutely amazed at the Power of God's Word!
